Since the dawn of time, people have built walls, to shut themselves in, to protect themselves, or even to express themselves. Whether historical, psychological or even botanical, these ramparts have established themselves in our daily lives and reveal many facets of our reality.

With the exhibition “Extra Muros: beyond the walls”, Europa Expo invites the general public to discover walls in all their forms from 22nd April 2023, via immersive, interactive and surprising displays. From the Great Wall of China to the Berlin Wall, by way of other walls such as the sound barrier, “Extra Muros: beyond the walls” offers an original reading of the world, through its emblematic walls.

Thanks to objects and artworks from private collections as well as from Belgian and foreign institutions, in particular the Louvre Museum, once again Europa Expo has created an exhibition of international status that will leave nobody indifferent.

A challenging philosophical dimension

While previous exhibitions recounted historical subjects (Napoleon, Tutankhamun) or ambiances (I love Japan), the exhibition “Extra Muros: beyond the walls”, for which Philippe Raxhon, a professor in modern history at the University of Liège and novelist, is the curator, covers a universal theme and questions our world through walls, to better understand them and thus better understand ourselves.

Far from a sequential tour, the exhibition is divided into three successive parts in order to emphasise the polysemy of walls: WALLS WHICH OPPRESS AND ENCLOSE, WALLS OF MEMORY AND THOSE THAT PROTECT, before finishing with EXPRESSIVE WALLS AND LIBERATING WALLS. This evocation of walls and their countless meanings, from darkness to light, guides our thinking, punctuated by the diversity of emotions experienced throughout the tour.
